Wireless base crosses 1078.4 mn with 28.6 mn net addtions in Oct’16


Reliance Jio’s Welcome Offer continued its stupendous success in Oct’16 as it helped the company garner more than 19.6 mn new customers on its network taking its total base to 35.6 mn. Total net additions by all wireless operators stood at massive 28.6 mn in Oct’16 as overall base of mobile customers reaches 1078.4 mn.  Market leader Airtel reported net additions of 2.3 mn while Idea Cellular added 6.3 mn followed by BSNL with 1.18 mn and Vodafone 1.17mn. Airtel’s mobile customer base stood at 262.23 mn ,  Vodafone’s at 201.9 mn and Idea Cellular 185.1 mn at the end of Oct’16.

Total telecom base of the country was  1102.94 mn with 24.52 mn wireline conections . The overall tele-density rose from 84.09 in Sep’16 to 86.25 in Oct’16. The urban tele-density increased from 156.24 to 160.50 and the rural teledensity increased from 51.24 to 52.43 in Oct’16.

In wireline segment subscriber base increased from 24.49 mn in Sep’16 16 to 24.52 mn in Oct’16 . Net addition in the wireline subscriber base was 0.02 million with a monthly growth rate of 0.10%. The share of urban and rural subscribers in total wireline subscribers were 84.04% and 15.96% respectively in Oct’16. After a long time MTNL reported positive addition numbers in landline with net additions of 25307 customers taking its total base to 3.48 mn. Bharti Airtel added 11000 and Vodafone 6175 wireline customers in the same month.


Broadband subscribers increased from 192.30 mn in Sep’16 to 218.42 million in Oct’16 with a monthly growth rate of 13.59%. Mobile broadband showed an increase of 14.97% with total base of 199.9 mn while wireline broadband stood at 17.93 mn. Airtel leads  the broadband segment with market share of 22.05 %  followed by Vodafone with 18.40% and Reliance Jio with 16.45% as on Oct’16. Reliance Jio found its place among top three broadband service provider displacing BSNL within two months of its launch owing to superior 4G technology as other incumbent operators are get ready to upgrade their networks from 2G/3G to 4G.
